who is the Real Samiir?
‘The Real Samiir’ (2024 | 22mins) is an experimental hybrid performance piece depicting a segment of a fictional game show, which combines live performance and pre-recorded video. The piece features pre-recorded captions, live and pre-recorded BSL interpretation, and diegetic audio descriptions from the live and pre-recorded characters.
The live set consists of a roughly 3-foot high podium in front of a large green screen. There is a camera pointed at a 3/4 angle towards the podium. On the adjacent wall is a projection of a virtual game show set which has been made in Photoshop. Within the virtual environment are three podiums, each occupied by a pre-recorded Samiir. From left to right, they are: Hot Girl Samiir, Himbo Samiir, and Hater Samiir. A fourth podium (occupied by Host Samiir, who appears live within the projection via green screen) faces the pre-recorded contestants within the virtual scene.
The Real Samiir was produced for the @Disturbance Artists Residency (2024) and was featured during a hybrid live-streamed and in-person performance at Ugly Duck studio in London.
